The Territory

The territory of Piave DOC covers a vast plain, which extends from the northeastern border of the province of Treviso with the region Friuli, to the outlet of the river Piave, to Cortellazzo; from the hills of Conegliano and Montello, to the first inland of the city of Venice.

In this vast area, which represents one of northern Italy’s largest Doc denominated areas, vines have been cultivated for at least three millennia, as demonstrated by substantial prehistoric evidence.

By the early twentieth century, cultivation was rationalized through the plant of numerous vineyards, following the indications given by the nearby Wine School of Conegliano, which was the first to be founded in Italy in 1876.

Year 1959 sees the rise of the first wineries and the Consorzio Tutela Vini del Piave.

The land, with its own peculiarities and tastes, helps differentiate a wine, making it unique in its bouquet. From ancient red soils, which correspond to the first presence of the Piave to the west of Montello, to the rich textured land, to those of medium texture and finally to the prevailing clay soils: the Doc Piave area features a wide variety of lands and microclimates, which make it difficult to identify a general nature for wines of the Piave, which differ in typology and history, environment and processing traditions.

Here we can find many kinds of vines. If Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère are the most grown and prevailing black grape vines, no doubt the Raboso Piave is the most representative of the entire area. Likewise, if the Pinot Grigio has found an ideal habitat in our lands, one of the most interesting white wines is the Manzoni Bianco. It is also necessary to mention wines such as Prosecco, Refosco, Riesling, Malbec and the unique Verduzzo Trevigiano.

The lands crossed by the river Piave, which still cherish many touching memories of the Great War, represent a fascinating and complex cultural system, deeply marked by a millennial and passionate care of its landscape; in this area the rural vocation influenced the history, settling values and cultures, traditions and vineyards.

La Strada dei Vini del Piave offers itself to the most careful and demanding tourists, valorizing the Doc Piave territory together with its wines, intended not only as simply wines, but as the result of a joyful combination between land, traditions, skills, passions and ideas, which can be told only through a bottle.

Landscapes that surprisingly change, combining the plain to the mountains of the Prealpi Trevigiane, the hills of Prosecco to the woods of Montello and Cansiglio, along the rivers Piave, Sile and Livenza through fortified cities, towns and peculiar villages, charming castles and Venetian villas, countless churches and museums: a rich historic-artistic and cultural heritage, which has always been sought and appreciated.

The list of all artistic excellences and landscapes to visit would be endless: Treviso, Valdobbiadene, Conegliano, the birthplace of Cima, Oderzo, with its ruins dating back to the Roman rule, Vittorio Veneto, Asolo and still many other beauties, including our Municipality San Polo di Piave.
